C'mon - how could I resist?
We're currently baby-squirrel-sitting for a neighbo/ur's friends during the long weekend.
The squirrel's name is Eager. :D
We'll miss Eager when he's back with Mom and Dad, but a baby squirrel is a lot of work. Just think: he was still bare naked and tiny when found! Eager's Mom has been a wildlife rehabilitator for many years, so she knows about proper care.
Mom and I raised a young squirrel, but Charlie was almost Eager's present size when he appeared. He was a lot of fun, and raising a squirrel's what I guess an educator would call "An Enriching Experience."
It was a blast watching my punk buddies tripping out on our squirrel. Charlie tried nesting first in Sue Delicious' hair, then Theres.' ;) Joe Malicious just kept saying variations of, "I can't believe I'm petting/looking at/hangin' out with a squirrel!" They were delighted.
Charlie'd play in the tree in our backyard once he was old enough, and he'd stay out longer and longer each time.
One evening he didn't come when we called, so he got to rough it that night.
He was waiting to come in the next morning, ate a ton and slept all day. ;) He ate a ton again that evening and went straight back to sleep.
He didn't want to go out for a few days after that. ;)
He came in every evening after that until he was just about full-grown, and then he was gone. :)
